Marvel sparked serious fan interest with the news that Robert Downey Jr. would be returning to the MCU in End of the worldbut not as Tony Stark…instead he’ll somehow play Fantastic Four villain Doctor Doom. It has since been reported that Chris Evans and Haley Atwell will also return, and while most fans assume they will also play Variants, a tantalizing Marvel fan theory suggests otherwise. According to this theory from Reddit user WillemDaFriends, her part of the film will take place in the alternate past where Steve Rogers traveled Endgameand his temporal shenanigans created the alternate Earth setting of Fantastic four.
The theory
To understand the role of Chris Evans and Haley Atwell’s characters in this Marvel theory, you may need an introduction to the past and future of this cinematic universe. In EndgameCaptain America used the Quantum Realm to travel through the past and return each Infinity Stone to where it came from. But then he becomes a romantic villain, staying in the past to enjoy a life with Peggy Carter… the life he practically missed when he was frozen in the ice, only to wake up in the present.
The next part is not directly about Chris Evans, but about him Wonder The theory touches on a possible explanation for the setting of what is to come Fantastic four Film. We don’t know much about the first film starring Marvel’s first family, but we do know that it’s a ’60s film set on an alternate Earth. Probably some of the upcoming shenanigans in End of the world will explain (perhaps with a hard or soft reboot) how characters from half a century ago and a multiverse in the present (not to mention dimension) end up the Avengers and other MCU heroes.
There are many ways to do this Fantastic fourThe multiverse could have been created. However, this Chris Evans Marvel theory states that the Fantastic four The universe is an alternate reality that he accidentally created when he traveled back in time to spend his life with Peggy Carter. This really makes sense since the Fantastic four The film is set in a more retro-futuristic 1960s, such as Captain America may have created by providing advanced knowledge of the future.
In the world of Star TrekChris Evans’ character doing this would be a big no-no, but we can only assume he would be willing to change the future to save countless lives. How much suffering would the MCU be spared if someone could warn them about Hydra’s infiltration of SHIELD or about the arrival of Thanos? It’s easy to imagine Cap doing everything he can to save lives and, along the way, creating an entirely different universe, both because of his direct actions and because various scientists would be able to study the super soldier serum that comes through his veins flow.
Admittedly, that Chris Evans The Marvel theory isn’t perfect…it doesn’t explain why an older Steve Rogers shows up at the end, for example Endgame when he’s supposedly stuck in another dimension. Of course, we might see some contemporary storytelling at work, and the events of Fantastic Four: Getting Started And avenger: End of the world will possibly explain his appearance. Either way, we really want this theory to be true, because that would mean we get to see the “real” Cap and Peggy in the upcoming film and not another meaningless multiversal variant or a disappointing fake.
